Who this group is for
This group is designed for veterans who want practical, structured tools for managing strong emotions, getting through hard moments, and handling relationships with more steadiness.
To join, you’ll need:
-
To be a military or RCMP veteran with an approved Veterans Affairs Canada claim
-
A primary therapist (a psychologist, counsellor, social worker, or psychiatrist) you’ll see at least once a month for the length of the group
-
To commit to all 15 sessions
This group works alongside individual therapy, not in place of it. Your therapist remains your main point of support throughout.
What you'll learn
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills are organized into four areas.
Emotion regulation: Understand your emotions, reduce your vulnerability to painful ones like anger, guilt, and shame, and build more positive experiences.
Distress tolerance: Get through crises and strong urges without making things worse, and let go of suffering you don’t need to carry.
Mindfulness: Notice when you’re getting activated, ground yourself in the present, and create room to choose how you respond. Build more space for joy, interest, achievement, safety, and connection.
Interpersonal effectiveness: Say what you need in ways that protect your relationships, handle conflict well, and respond in line with your values.
How it works
This is a structured skills class, closer to a course than a traditional therapy group. Each session follows the same rhythm:
-
Learn a new skill
-
Practice it together in session
-
Use it in your own life during the week
-
Review how it went at the next session
Because each skill builds on the last, this is a closed group. Everyone starts together, and no one new joins partway through.
